ECO printing
Who would have thought.  In the space of a week I have had two very different but great experiences print making.
The first was at the regular monthly calligraphy workshop where Angela lead us all in print making from nature.  We used sticks and leaves and resists - fabulous.  The idea was to add calligraphy to the print but we were all having so much fun that most of the time was taken up with printing.
The second experience at Bev's home was the famous 'eco' printing.  Again leaves, flowers and bits of bark were used to print.  Stacking leaves between sheets of paper was a challenge and then the bundle (tied with sting) was steamed for about two hours in a concoction of vinegar, rusted objects and water.  Anxious times waiting for the results.  It was well worth it.  I think I could become addicted to 'eco' printing.  We found that gum leaves, sage and carnation flowers produced the best results.
Many thanks to Angela and Bev!
To see more results of both printing have a look under books and prints.

ALAW 2013 Cranes galore

I have made 150 cranes so far for the ALAW 2013 challenge.  It is surprisingly therapeutic.  I don't think at this stage that they will all feature in the finished project.

Binding Challenge 2013

The Canberra Craft Bookbinders Guild has challenged the members to a 'Bind Challenge'.
This challenge is the brainchild of one of the Guild's members Lee Bratt.  As Lee says, "this is a challenge about opposites, backward and upside down.  Lee wants us to start at the end.  The first part of the challenge is to make a container, size, shape, materials are up to the creator but it must have four sections / compartments or can be four boxes joined or not.  This part of the challenge is to be at a finished standard before the April meeting."

Hmmmm..... It would be so much easier to wait until all the elements have been revealed but .... probably not as much fun.  My containers have been made from an old poetry book and an old music book.

To keep myself honest I am posting my first part of the challenge.

ALAW 2013

Just published my contribution to A Letter A Week blog.  I had fallen behind but I am now up to date!  Amazing.  The theme is Peace and I found the challenge quite hard but very appealing.  My granddaughter folding some origami paper cranes reminded me of the Japanese legend.  The traditional Japanese crane is a symbol of peace.  So I have decided to use origami cranes as part of my final piece.  I started out with red cranes but realised that perhaps red is not quite the colour of peace.  Progressed then to blue and finally have decided on a recycled first aid book from my trainee nursing days.

Here is the start.

What a great workshop hosted by the Canberra Calligraphy Society in February.  The tutor was Massimo Polello from Turin.  What a delight.  Massimo proved to be a brilliant tutor who was able to encourage all of us to produce work that we would never have even contemplated before.  It was a fantastic three days.

Some examples below from the workshop.
